M&EM Project: Advancing Quality Care for Ethnic Minority & Migrant Patients at Cork University Maternity Hospital with Dr Laura Cronin

Studying Access to Maternity Services for Women Asylum Seekers and Refugees: A Multi-Phase Qualitative Design in Northern Ireland with Nicole Winters

Dr Laura Cronin is a Postdoctoral Researcher at University College Cork with experience in collaborative, community-engaged research to improve equity and quality in maternity care. Her work at Cork University Maternity Hospital focuses on addressing barriers faced by migrant and ethnic minority women.

Nicole Winters is a midwife at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital, Belfast, and a final-year PhD researcher in the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences at Ulster University. She holds a BSc in Midwifery and an MSc in Advanced Professional Practice from Queen’s University Belfast. Her doctoral research is the first to explore how asylum-seeking and refugee women access maternity services in Northern Ireland, aiming to identify barriers to care and improve equity in service provision. Nicole’s wider interests include health inequalities, social justice in maternity care, and supporting marginalised communities. She also volunteers with organisations assisting asylum-seeking and refugee women, as well as survivors of trafficking, which complements her research and deepens her understanding of the challenges they face in accessing care.
